Brazil is rightly famous for its beaches. This will give you a very brief sampling as to why.

Meaípe

Meaípe

  June 15, 1995

This is one of the more famous beaches in the state of Espírito Santo, Meaípe. The landlocked residents of the state of Minas Gerais flock here in the summer to enjoy themselves. As you can see, it's just as nice here in the dead of winter

Ponta da Fruta

Ponta da Fruta

  June 15, 1995

Here we are on our honeymoon in Espírito Santo at a beach called Ponta da Fruta near the state capital, Vitória.

Mercia at Trancoso

Mercia at Trancoso

  June 20, 1995

Mércia relaxes on the beach at Trancoso in the state of Bahia near Porto Seguro. It took us about an hour and a half on a dune buggy from Porto Seguro, but it was worth every jolt and the bruised tailbone.

Mercia at Mucuri

Mercia at Mucuri

  June 25, 1995

Mércia (who never before expressed a desire to model) relaxes in a fishing boat in Mucuri, the southernmost coastal point in the state of Bahia. Her family has been coming to what used to be a quaint fishing village with no electricity since 1975. Now it's a bustling town with eucalyptus forests nearby to feed the maw of Bahia Sul, a paper products company. It's also crawling with tourists in the summer, as you can imagine.

Mucuri at Low Tide

  June 25, 1995

Despite the fact that it is crowded in the summer, Mucuri still has its quiet charms.

Copacabana from Sugarloaf

Copacabana from Sugarloaf

  August 20, 1996

This is a view of one of Rio de Janeiro's most famous beaches: Copacabana. The view is from the rock in Guanabara Bay known as Sugarloaf or Pão de Açucar.

Us at Barra da Tijuca

Us at Barra da Tijuca

  August 20, 1996

Here we are at Barra da Tijuca, a neighborhood of Rio De Janeiro that looks much more like Miami. Nevertheless, the beaches are lovely and the water the last time I was there (December 1999, January 2000) was very clean. The photographer obviously wanted to demonstrate what parallax is.

Randy at Boa Viagem

Randy at Boa Viagem

  August 02, 1998

This is your humble author at Boa Viagem, the main beach in Recife. It's a little on the tourist side (reminding one more of Miami than Brazil), but it's a great place for people watching.

Mercia at Itamaracá

Mercia at Itamaracá

  August 04, 1998

Mércia enjoys a tranquil day on the Island of Itamaracá near Recife and Olinda in the state of Pernambuco. Other than the residents that day we were the only people on the beach.

Itapiraca

Itapiraca

  August 07, 1998

This is a beach in the state of Bahia on an island that sits in the Bahia de Todos os Santos (Bay of All Saints) near Salvador.

Mercia at Ilha dos Frades

Mercia at Ilha dos Frades

  August 07, 1998

Mércia enjoys the warm water (in the middle of their winter) at the beach at Ilha dos Frades (Island of the Monks), another islanad in the Bahia de Todos os Santos.

Prainha

Prainha

  January 01, 2000

This is Prainha (Little Beach) a popular surfing destination outside Rio de Janeiro.

Saquarema

Saquarema

  January 03, 2000

This is the famous Itaúna beach in Saquarema, a small town in Rio de Janeiro state about three hours from Rio de Janeiro city in a region known as Região dos Lagos (Lakes Region). The national surfing championship takes place here and while lovely, the surf is strong and the water is coooooold. For the hydrophobic, there are places outside town that offer horseback riding through forests and farms.

Barra do Jucu

Barra do Jucu

  August 10, 2002

This is a beach in a neighborhood of a town called Vila Velha in the state of Espírito Santo. Surfing and bodyboard contests take place here and about a quarter mile from here is where I will retire - not soon enough, unfortunately.
