One wonders as per this article in today's New York Times. Apparently some of Henry Kissinger's backers pressured Foreign Affairs magazine to limit Kenneth Maxwell responding to a letter criticizing Maxwell's position regarding Henry Kissinger's support for the Chilean coup in 1973. The leader of the reaction against Maxwell was William Rogers, Assistant Secretary of State for Latin American Affairs under Kissinger and a Vice-President of Kissinger Associates, the consulting firm. The dispute started in response to Maxwell's review of the book, The Pinochet File: A Declassified Dossier on Atrocity and Accountability (A National Security Archive Book) and based largely on declassified US Government documents.
Here's Maxwell's review of the book and here's Rogers' response along with Maxwell's response.
Two things that I wish Rogers would explain:
1.) If it is a myth that the US had any involvement in or support of the Chilean coup, please explain the conversations that Kissinger had with Nixon that I wrote about here.
2.) Please explain this statement of yours "Like it or not, we are identified with the regime's origins and hence charged with some responsibility for its action. This accents our strong interest in getting the goc [Government of Chile] to pursue acceptable human rights practices." in light of your claims that this is a myth.
Kissinger lied about Chile in the post I linked to above. He lied to the US Ambassador to Argentina about human rights abuses. Why should we believe anything positive he or his defenders say about him?
