As I wrote here in April, Michelle Bachelet and Soledad Alvear were two very viable candidates to be Chile's first woman president. Now it appears that they have taken the first step towards fulfilling that goal:

Alvear, a Christian Democrat, and Bachelet, a member of the Socialist Party, will also now be able to actively participate in the campaigning for municipal elections, which opens next week.
I think that the smart money is on Bachelet who I have written about here, here and here. Her story is fascinating, to say the least.
