"We used to live. Now we strive to exist. So what if we have freedom of speech...What use is it if no one listens?" Sameer Said, an Iraqi quoted this week in the wake of four years of occupation and war.
Four years ago today, President Bush warned weapons inspectors to leave Iraq. War was imminent. I won't recount the all the details and debacle of this misadventure - both in conception and execution - as it's unfolded since then. Suffice to say that Bush's Iraq policy has become the central symbol of an administration that will, without question, go down as one of the most deceptive, corrupt and incompetent in our history.
I suggest, on this anniversary of the final prelude to war, taking a moment to read Bush's speech to the nation exactly four years ago (available on a whitehouse.gov web page presciently titled, "Iraq - Denial & Deception") and following, in the context of that blast from the past, ponder this current dispatch from Baghdad filed by
