An admirable sentiment, admirably expressed, I think. In any case, Randy, this is a heads-up: next month Perseus Books will publish Soccernomics: Why England loses, why Germany and Brazil win, and why the US, Japan, Australia, Turkey-and even Iraq-are destined to become the kings of the world's most popular sport, by Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski. How they intend to put all of that on the dust cover is beyond my poor powers of cognition, but given your interest in the game, I thought you might want to know that the book is on its way to a bookstore near you some time soon. The book will be in trade paperback format and it will run you $14.95. In a completely unrelated topic, it is now snowing here in our happy little burg, snowing in the middle of October, which makes me think that maybe global warming isnt such a bad idea at this point.

Thanks for the tip, Akaky. I enjoyed Kuper's book, Football Against the Enemy.
